I saw a cardinal outside my window this morning, in between rain showers. It's spring in Chicago, which mostly means wild temperature fluctuations---frustrating cold mingled with days of hope. Spring is a good time to start new projects, but in my case, I'm in the midst of finishing up one.
My new novel, Daughters of Crime, is in the final editing phase, and I'm thrilled to be closer to bringing the book to my readers. The manuscript is due August 1 and the publication date is April 2027. Publishing is a slow process. There's the sometimes ridiculously long time it takes to write a novel, followed by steps toward publication day that flow like molasses. But we're getting there.
Another project I have going on is writing short stories for the adult literacy market. My volunteer work is teaching adults to read at Literacy Chicago. There's a dearth of published material that is aimed at adult learners. Adults learning to read should not be forced to read childish texts. I started writing the stories to read in class with my students. Now I'm wondering if I should try to publish them. I'm in the research phase of this project, but getting excited about it.
I'll be returning this October to Tepotzlan, Mexico, for a two week writing retreat. I think at that point I'll be starting a new novel, though I have no thoughts on what that story would be. It might be the next Nicky Sullivan book, following Clean Kill.
I'm concentrating these days on being grateful for the very good stretch I'm in. I'm loving retirement and have ample time for writing, reading, teaching, and hanging out with my wonderful wife, Linda, and our two cats, Scout and Tater. Everything's going well on all fronts, and it's rare to be able to say that. If I find myself complaining about something, I stop and remind myself that small problems are a part of life. To be free of the larger ones is a gift.
Please reach out and let me know how you're doing. I love hearing from readers. You can comment below, or write me directly at annie3310@gmail.com. Until next time, much love.
